The Montbell Stretch Gaiter is a simple yet effective ultralight gaiter for trail running, adventure racing and hiking. The Schoeller Dynamic stretch material is awesome. It is really tough, breathes well, keeps out dirt, rocks, snow, resists water and stretches for comfort. There is a small hook up front to attach to your shoe laces. Elastic material at the top and bottom of the gaiter provide a tight fit.
The strap that goes underneath your shoe is simple shock cord that is adjustable for length and is easily replaceable. 1/8” Shock Cord is the size that I have found is best to replace the cord with. This size can be found at good outdoor gear shops. I wish the cord was more durable over rocks though. I frequently trail run over shell rock and this cuts up the cord pretty fast. If you run over rocks like this I would recommend replacing the cord with 1/16” (or similar size) utility wire. This is slightly harder to adjust for length but is much more durable over rocky terrain.
I’ve used these gaiters for numerous trail runs and several adventure races and mountain bike rides that included hike-a-bike sections. The gaiters allowed me to go faster with more comfort than if I wasn’t using a gaiter. One caution is that once you use an ultralight gaiter, you will probably never go into the outdoors without them.
