SPOT Review: This Could Save Your Life! |

I’ve tested the SPOT Messenger while expedition adventure racing, mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, river boarding, mountaineering, road trips, and watched online while family members used SPOT.
Overall I am very pleased with SPOT, and my wife always feels better when I take it. If you know its limitations, and know how to use it, you should be happy with SPOT too.
The most important function is very easy. If you need Rescue service for a serious emergency situation, just turn on SPOT by pressing the ON/OFF button (when power is on, the indicator light will blink once every 3 seconds), wait an additional 2 seconds then press and hold down the 911 button for at least 2 seconds.
The other functions are fairly easy to use. The only tricky function is the Tracking function. You need to hold down the OK button for at least 5 seconds to go into track mode. Before you can send an OK message you have to take SPOT out of tracking. The easiest and most reliable way I have found to do this is to turn the unit off, then back on. I assume the 911 message works the same, but can’t confirm this because I haven’t need Search and Rescue to come pull me out of the backcountry yet. Hopefully that won’t happen.
The limitations that I see for SPOT aren’t bad if you use the unit correctly. The unit needs to have a clear line of site to the sky to work. This means that you need to have SPOT outside, preferably with the SPOT logo up. In my testing SPOT works well in a car as long as you set in on the dash, and fine in the top mesh pocket of a backpack. I wish SPOT had a separate button and indicator light for tracking. Talking with the manufacture their design goal was to make SPOT as small, lightweight and inexpensive as possible. I think they did a pretty good job, even though I would make a few changes if I were in charge.
In the future SPOT will go with me during my backcountry workouts, races, adventures and road trips. I will also send it with family members when they are doing the same. It is a small price to pay for peace of mind.
